Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in an IFS session?

Sessions involve gentle reflection and guided exploration, sometimes including visualisation or creative elements. You’ll be supported to explore your inner experience at a pace that feels safe, helping you connect with your core Self:

the calm, grounded centre within you that can bring healing and balance.

  • For adults, this can help process trauma, ease inner conflict, and build self-understanding.

  • For children and young people, IFS ideas can be introduced through imagery, story, or art to help make sense of feelings and behaviour.

What happens in EMDR?

EMDR sessions follow a structured process focused on safety and gradual reprocessing of difficult experiences. You’ll begin by learning grounding techniques before working with your therapist to identify memories or feelings linked to distress.

During reprocessing, you’ll focus on an image or thought while following eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This helps the brain to process memories so they feel less intense and more manageable.

What happens in Art Therapy?

Art psychotherapy combines talking with creative expression. You don’t need any artistic skill to take part. The art materials are simply another way of exploring thoughts, feelings, and experiences that can be hard to put into words.

  • For adults, this can help process trauma, manage emotions, and discover new perspectives in a safe and contained way.
  • For children and young people, art therapy offers a natural, engaging way to express themselves when words may be difficult, supporting their emotional development and wellbeing.

What is Clinical Supervision for therapists?

Clinical supervision provides a dedicated space for therapists and practitioners to reflect on their work.  Supervision is collaborative and thoughtful, helping you maintain safe and ethical practice while supporting your growth and wellbeing. It’s a place to explore clinical challenges, strengthen confidence, and sustain compassionate care.

What is Reflective Practice for teams?

Reflective practice groups give teams the opportunity to pause, think together, and explore the emotional impact of their work. These sessions provide a safe and supportive space for staff to share experiences, strengthen resilience, and reconnect with their values. The focus is on sustaining compassionate, high-quality care while supporting the wellbeing of the whole team.

What if I’ve never had therapy before?

Many people come to therapy for the first time unsure of what to expect. We take time to explain the process and move at a pace that feels right for you. There’s no pressure, the first session is an opportunity to see whether this feels like a good fit and to ask any questions you might have.

Do you offer online?

Yes. Therapy and supervision can be offered either online or in person. Online sessions are held over secure video, making support accessible wherever you are. Many people value the flexibility this provides, while still being able to build a strong and reliable therapeutic relationship.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes, therapy is confidential. Information is only shared if there is a serious risk of harm or a legal duty to do so. At Phases, we take confidentiality and data protection seriously, so you can feel safe in the knowledge that what you share will be respected and handled with care.
